Malabar Fish Curry/ Kerala Varutharacha Meen Curry / Fish Curry with roasted coconut

Rich n Hearty Kerala Style Roasted Coconut Fish Curry … made with Spices, Tamarind, Coconut and Balanced to  Perfection! Serve with a side of Mashed Tapioca and you have a Match made in Heaven…!!A simple Kerala style Varutharacha Meen (fish) Curry has a robust heat from the spices and is balanced with a rich coconut sauce. One of our house staples! Here is how to do it.


Ingredients

Fish-1/2 kg

Coconut-3/4 cup

Coriander Powder-2 tsp

Chilli Powder-2 tsp

Turmeric Powder-1/4 tsp

Fenugreek Powder-less than 1/4 tsp

Green chilli-3

Garlic -3 cloves

Ginger -med

Small Onion-13

Tomato-1/2

Water-1 1/2 cup

Salt-

Tamarind -lemon sized

Curry leaves

Coconut Oil -3 tbsp


Method

Roast coconut along with 2 small onions and curry leaves. When it turns golden brown, add all powders and roast. Allow to cool and grind to a fine paste. Heat oil and saute onion, ginger, garlic and green chilli, when golden add tamarind water and ground paste along with water and salt, boil well. Then add fish, close and cook. After 15 minutes open and add tomato and cook for few more minutes until the gravy thicken. Finally, season with small onion. Close for few minutes and serve. Its best to serve the next day.
